Éric Van Hove

Mahjouba: stage Rotterdam-Zuid
Éric Van Hove | 21 January – 20 May 2023 | #commission
Take a look at Éric Van Hove's workplace. In 2023, a few residents of Rotterdam will participate in a design of an electric scooter that, until now, has been made entirely in Morocco. This is the last phase of the manufacturing process, and after this Rotterdam 'stage' the e-scooter will actually go into production. Watch the creation process from the start, and get to work yourself in the back of the room, such as students from the Zadkine Startcollege, who help build in the workspace. This project is not only an exercise in craft, but Éric creates moments to come together and discover creativity, pride and a sense of cultural identity.

Fenmei Hu

KOM
Fenmei Hu | 21 January – 22 April 2023 | #commission
KOM is a long-term project in which Chinese-Rotterdam artist Fenmei Hu (Space 101) tells the story of the ancient porcelain route between China, the Netherlands and Rotterdam. Inspired by her grandmother's Chinese landscape, with KOM she shows a collection of rice bowls that Hu received from the Chinese community in Rotterdam. These porcelain utensils not only embody the story of ancient transcultural trade routes, but also the story of the migration of people and the cultural exchange that originated through Chinese porcelain.

Test Ride: Mahjouba

Saturday 22 april 2023 from 2pm - 4pm | #event
In the past few weeks, we have been working hard on an electric scooter for Mahjouba, Eric van Hove's project. On Saturday 22 April, together with the various Rotterdam craftsmen who contributed, we will present the end result. At the same time, we are completing the KOM project with a program hosted by the Rotterdam 糸 (Ito) Collective. With a panel discussion and a Chinese tea ceremony, they go deeper into the theme of Fenmei Hu's project.

This program is part of South Explorer, a cultural event with more than 45 participating locations in South Rotterdam.

Pip Passchier

#Fellowship
During her fellowship, Pip investigates how we can look at South Rotterdam through the eyes of children.

Pip: "With the shape collector we drive through the neighborhood to collect shapes with children from the neighborhood. A different place every week, with a different view. Public space is full of coincidences and surprises that everyone looks at differently. In the artworks of the children you get an insight into how they see this. This results in great works that are always different in shape."

Mar Muñoz Aparici

#Fellowship
As part of her fellowship, Mar investigates the role of cultural institutions in the public space of the neighbourhood. Her research runs from May to December 2022.

Mar: "Zuid. Boijmans Van Beuningen is a unique place because of the diverse cultural context in a multifunctional building with a wide range of public services. During my fellowship I experiment with barrier-reducing spatial interventions to bring residents of Rotterdam South into contact with the cultural offer of Zuid. Boijmans."

⍰ ⍰ ⍰ / 3 Question Marks, Each Inside A Frame

#Commission
'⍰ ⍰ ⍰' shows an artistic research into the significance of Rotterdam-South as a framework. 'South' is not only a place on the map, but also a concept that often evokes negative connotations. In response to this, three artists are creating new work inspired by their impression of the identity of 'South'.

Idleness' Owl

#Commission
In 'Idleness' Owl' Priscila Fernandes searches for parallel stories in an alternative collection guide for Boijmans. Fernandes refers to artworks in Boijmans' collection by imagining the inner (and somewhat fictitious) lives of the artworks and their creators. In Idleness' Owl you can read the story of an owl who lives in the depot and whose hunger can only be satisfied by art.

Sotoe

#Commission
Sotoe, an audio-visual text made by Creave Studio, is on view at Boijmans Hillevliet. In the framework of ‘The Artist as Educator’, Creave Studio (Roberto Romello and Romy Zhang) initiated a mapping of how ‘study’ takes place in non-institutionalized contexts. Not at a school or in a museum, but around the kitchen table or near a local basketball court, for example. Teaming up with three artists and seven resident-creators, and the people within their environment, they explored different locations in Rotterdam-South. Their conversations are captured in ‘Sotoe’, an audio-visual text. ‘Sotoe will be shown within the neighbourhood as well as at Zuid. Boijmans.

Heroes of Zuid.

Creativity is flourishing in Rotterdam South, and many young makers get inspired here. Boijmans spoke with three young makers in Rotterdam South: what is their idea of the museum of the future and what connects them to Zuid. Boijmans?

The stories of Jayda Reeberg, Gyatso Davids and Isa Zichterman have been recorded by filmmaker Loes Korten. The three short documental stories take you on a journey through their life, work and career. Through these stories, the young makers take the stage, and they become the heroes of Zuid. Boijmans.

The Artist as Educator

As part of the program ‘The Artist as Educator’, two artists and one collective from Rotterdam were asked to initiate an educational project by means of an artistic practice. Through these projects and the work of Creave Studio, Seecum Cheung and Priscila Fernandes the intent was to explore the possibilities of learning with/as art. This publication is a reflection of this programme which took place in the Fall of 2021.

Vince Blok

#Commission
I Never Knew About Fauvism
is a wall painting by Vince Blok, a painter and sculptor based in Rotterdam-Zuid. Working with the theme of ‘water’, he depicted a boat on the water, painted from the viewer’s perspective. He took inspiration from Rotterdam-Zuid’s diversity, the reflection of the water as a (distorted) mirror of reality, and the importance of the River Maas for the city.

Extra lessons

Primary school students undertake a voyage of discovery through the worlds of art and culture, guided by professional artists and museum docents, while simultaneously getting to know their own neighbourhood better. The extra lessons are available to all pupils in the Children’s Zone, which comprises Rotterdam-Zuid’s focus areas. Our museum docents provide lessons for pupils from primary schools in and around Hillevliet. We are working together with the Savornin Lohmanschool, de Willem van Oranjeschool and the Bogermanschool. For Zuid. Boijmans, this is a great opportunity to team up with the Sports and Culture Club and thus get to know the neighbourhood better.

Talentdevelopment

Every three months, we invite a different young artist for a talent-development process, including a mentorship with a more experienced artist. As part of the process, the young artist is asked to create a wall painting at Zuid. Boijmans inspired by the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in response to a particular theme. They are also asked to organise a programme of workshops and masterclasses. In addition, in consultation with the neighbourhood, we identify the needs of young talent to help them with their professional development.

The Utopian

Food brings us together, with the tableware as a silent witness. Boijmans has collected these objects for decades as part of the design collection, shedding light on centuries-old food cultures. In the context of Rotterdam as a world city, we are exploring the connections between Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s historical collections of art and design and the city’s contemporary food cultures. For centuries, we have used parlour games to tell each other a new, shared stories. In partnership with the writer, maker and presenter Abdelkader Benali and the theatre maker and actress Gabby Bakker, we have developed a series of workshops for a group of pupils. Together the group is working on a theatrical Parlour Game, a form of entertainment that dates back to the time of Erasmus (Rotterdam 1466 – Basel 1536).
