The unknown artist was named after the John Altar, of which Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum owns two panels. The master probably worked in Leiden or Gouda around 1520. For stylistic reasons, the painter is generally placed at the end of the 15th century, but research of the wood shows that it probably dates from 1520. That means that the painter worked in a relatively old-fashioned style, because renaissance elements, which were usual then in Holland, are completely absent.
