Cindy Sherman

Glen Ridge 1954

Cindy Sherman started her career as an assistant in a New York gallery. Her first works were black and white photographs, in which she exactly recreated so-called 'film stills' - photographs of fragments from films. Later she also photographed in colour and depicted women in various situations. In every photograph, she played the main role. Later series used paintings from the past as their starting-point. She photographed herself using all sorts of accessories, such as false breasts, bellies and wigs which refer to the women in works by Caravaggio, Rembrandt and others. In her recent work, she has been showing dolls and toys in destructive situations.
