Hendrik Voogd began his studies in 1783 at the drawing academy in Amsterdam and subsequently became a pupil of the painter Jurriaan Andriessen. Thanks to financial support from the Amsterdam art collector D. Versteegh, Voogd was able to travel to Rome in 1788 to specialise in landscape painting. There he made many drawings of landscapes. From 1806, cattle began playing an increasingly important role in his drawings and paintings.
