Virtually nothing is known about the life of Herri met de Bles. According to the biographer Karel van Mander, he owes his name to a white lock in his hair. He painted religious events in panoramic scenes, just like Joachim Patinir, who was possibly his uncle. Herri met de Bles was mainly active in Antwerp and stood at the cradle of the development of landscape painting.
