Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal)

Venetiƫ 1697 - Venetiƫ 1768

The Venetian painter Canaletto specialised in cityscapes of Venice. As a rule he based his paintings on extensive sketch studies that he made on location. Sometimes he used a camera obscura for this, a 17th-century predecessor of the photo camera. He could not make a print through the lens of the camera obscura, but he could produce a careful study of the composition. His cityscapes were very popular on the international market. From 1730 he even worked intensively with the British consul, who exported his works to England and arranged various trips to England for Canaletto.
