Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot was trained in Paris as a classical landscape painter, after which, at the age of 29, he made a long journey of two years to Italy. He stayed mainly in Rome, where he practised in a sensitive and free painting style by painting and drawing on location. He later returned to Italy on several occasions. His landscapes, constructed in grey-green tones and with muted colour transitions, became very popular around 1850 at the annual salons in Paris.
