Aelbert Cuyp was born in 1620 in Dordrecht, the son of a painter. His father, Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp (1594-1651/2) was a portrait painter. Aelbert Cuyp painted mainly landscapes and animals, but also seascapes, still lifes and portraits. Such a diversity in subject choice was unusual in the Golden Age, because artists often concentrated on one subject.
