The earliest known work of Hendrik Dubbels dates from 1641. So it is probable that he was already an independent painter at the age of twenty. Dubbels was mainly a naval painter and often found his inspiration in the works of maritime painter Simon de Vlieger. Probably the famous Ludolf Bakhuyzen was a pupil of Dubbels; the pupil became much more successful than his master.
