Willem Kalf

Rotterdam 1619 - Amsterdam 1693

Willem Kalf was a still life painter. Between around 1642 and 1646 he lived in Paris, where he mainly painted small kitchen still lifes and barn interiors. In 1651, he married the poetess Cornelia Pluvier. The couple would settle in Amsterdam in 1653. In this city, Kalf produced his typical sumptuous still lifes. He depicts gold and silver objects, glass, fruit and Turkish carpets against a dark background.
