Barend Cornelis Koekkoek

Middelburg 1803 - Kleef 1862

Barend Cornelis Koekkoek was the most celebrated Dutch landscape artist of his time. He learnt his trade from his father Johannes, who mainly painted seascapes. He later studied at the Royal Academy of Amsterdam. Koekkoek specialised in landscapes, inspired by the 17th century landscapes by Hobbema, Van Goyen and Wynants. He travelled with other painters through Germany, where he found inspiration for his Rhine landscapes. In 1841, Koekkoek started his own drawing academy in Cleve.
