Ask anything

  • Thomas asked

Was Nature morte avec des livres Henri Matisse's first artwork?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Thomas, it is an early work by Matisse, but I don't think it is actual his first. When searching online, I can at least find one from 1894-1895. Best, Lisa

More information

This early work by Matisse clearly relates to the Impressionist tendencies of the period. The objects are made up of adjacent dabs of colour without a strong contour. The shadows are also built up of dabs of colour. The forms are realistic and the colours are true to nature. It is only in his later Fauvist works that Matisse introduced his characteristic bright colours, simplified forms and exotic subject matters.
