The men at Emmaus

Ask anything

  • Nia Nova asked

Hello, dearest Boijmans Museum! It may be an odd question, but is this artwork or will it be ever available for purchase? Thank you! Sincerely, Nia

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hello Nia, I am sorry to disappoint you Nia, but this artywork belongs to a public collection and the general policy is not to sell public property. In this specific case the story attached to the painting is very important for the history of the museum so although it started as a 'forgery', it is one of the audiences' favorites in the collection. Kind regards, Els

  • Niya asked

I am a student at School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I am doing a research project about this The men at Emmaus. I am wondering if I can have all the provenance of this art work. Dealers and auction houses
Pricing details - if not available target similar pieces
    Attribution and authenticity issues
    Legality and Politics
    Prestigious or controversial prior owners

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Niya, this painting is made in 1937 by Han van Meegeren, a Dutch forger who succeeded in making professionals believe that this was an early painting by the 17th century master Johannes Vermeer. If you want to know more about it, just search on YouTube. There are several video's about the story, this is the one we made about it ourselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnnkuOz08GQ. In our registration system the provenance just mentions art dealer D.A. Hoogendijk. Kind regards, Els

  • Cara asked

Is it possible to see the paintings of Han van Meegeren at the Depot in March 2023?
    Kind Regards
    Cara

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Cara, the museum keeps 4 paintings by Han van Meegeren, which are all are in A2.13. You might be lucky to visit this depot with a free guided tour, but this is not sure. You might go to another storage room. To be sure you could either book a private tour or a private viewing. For both services extra costs (guide/art handling) are involved. See: https://www.boijmans.nl/en/groups or contact collectiebeheer@boijmans.nl. I hope this information is helpful. Kind regards, Els

  • Dinah Feldman Harari asked

I'm Dinah Feldman, course assistant at the Ema Gordon Klabin Cultural Foundation, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
We would like to use a image of of The men at Emmaus in our year free digital publication.
How can I request the rights to use the image?
    Kind regards,
    Dinah Feldman

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Dinah, Here in Europe a work of art is in the public domain 70 years after the author's or artist's death. Han van Meegeren died in 1947, so you can use the image without any special permission. You can download the photo (jpeg) from our website (online collection). In case you need a hi res image (tif), please contact images@boijmans.nl. All information is here: https://www.boijmans.nl/en/image-requests. Good luck with the publication! Kind regards, Els

  • Angela asked

Hi, I am a student and I am doing an extended essay related to art forgery.
But something is not clear for me about Van Meegeren’s forgeries
He replicated an original and existing Vermeer? or he painted using Vermeer’s technique and sold his own painting as a Vermeer?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

    Hi Angela,

Han van Meegeren famously imagined his own Vermeers by interpreting his juxtaposition and technique. He created pieces that would fill the gap between Vermeers old and more recent works, as these works were not much around. Maybe this video will help you: https://vimeo.com/125040078

    Best regards,
    Gianni

  • Makayla asked

Will this work and others of van Meegeren be on display at the depot in December (2021)?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Makayla, it will definitely be in the depot. But I cannot be sure it will be visible. This is our storage space and not a museum. So a lot will be visible, but not the entire collection. I hope you still come by in December to come and experience this new building! All best, Lisa Heinis.

  • Cristina asked

Hello, I'd like to know the technique and dimensions of Christ at Emmaus by Han van Meegeren. Thank you very much.

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

    Dear Cristina,
The painting is made with oil on canvas. As you may know, this painting is a famous falsification in Dutch art history. Van Meegeren used a canvas from the seventeenth century to make the painting a more convincing Vermeer. The dimensions of the painting are 118 x 130.5 cm. You can also find the dimensions under the tab ‘show all details’.
    Kind regards,
    Nina

  • Andrew asked

To whom is the Christ at Emmaus by van Meegeren on loan? When will it return to the Boijmans?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Andrew, the work is on loan to the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. It will return to Boijmans in April and will be on show again from 10 June, as part of the new collection presentation by Carel Blotkamp. Best, Rianne

  • Sarah Model asked

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Sarah, this work has indeed been signed (barely visible) in the left upper corner with IVmeer. Best, Friso Lammertse

More information

'Christ at Emmaus' is the most famous falsification in Dutch art history. In 1937 the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen purchased this painting as an extraordinary Vermeer, right under the nose of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Only after the Second World War, following a confession by the master forger Han van Meegeren, was the 'Vermeer' unmasked as a clever fake.
