Here Van de Woestijne has painted his daughter during the period in which he was a refugee in Great Britain. In this intimate work the soft colours appear to express the artist's love for his child. The painting, and in particular the girl's distant stare, has been interpreted as a metaphor for Van de Woestijne's feelings of alienation while living abroad.
