Ask anything

  • Adeline asked

Could you please tell me the provenance of Saint Christopher by Bosch for my research paper. Thank you in advance

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Adeline, the painting is loaned to the museum by the Boijmans Van Beuningen Foundation. It was bought in 1958, with the collection of D.G. van Beuningen. Van Beuningen acquired it from collector Franz Koenigs, who acquired it from a private collector in Italy. This is all we know. Kind regards, Els

  • Brett Allen-Bayes asked

I am travelling to the Netherlands in mid April and was planning to visit the gallery but am told that you're closed for renovations. I'm particularly interested the Flemish Primitives (van Eyck, Bosch, van der Weden, Memling etc.). Are any of your works available to view elsewhere in The Netherlands during this time? I have seen Bosches in the Prado, New York, Munich, Vienna and am planning viewing more in Belgium during this visit. Is it with visiting Den Bosch? Or do have any other suggestions?

Thanking you in advance for any assistance that you are able to offer.

    All good wishes,

    Brett

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Brett, your travel schedule is fine, because from March 22nd onward all your favourites will be on view at Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, in Gallery III on the fifth floor. The museum is indeed closed for renovation, but our depot is accessible to the public. Since we celebrate our 175 year anniversary, many beloved works are exhibited. Feel welcome and have a wonderful voyage! Kind regards, Els
p.s. in Den Bosch you can see a whole gallery with Bosch imitators from the 16th century, a.o. Jan Mandijn. Also worth a visit.

  • Dr. Ronit Rapp asked

I have written an academic article that deals with writing which was influenced by famous works of art. The article will be published in Hebrew in an academic journal.
I would like to ask about a permission to include in the article the painting:
Christopher Carrying the Christ Child Jheronimus Bosch (in circa 1500).
I would greatly appreciate your consent to my request. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further information.

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Ronnie, yes, you can use the image in your publication; there are no reproduction rights involved, but we would appreciate it very much if you could credit te photographer as well as the museum. Please contact images@boijmans.nl to obtain a hi res file and the correct credits. Kind regards, Els

  • Paul Tullis asked

Hi, I am on a mission to see every one of Bosch's works. Can I be sure to see St. Christopher, the Wayfarer Triptych, Owl's Nest drawing, After the Flood (follower) and the copy of the New York Adoration during my visit to the Depot? (I don't really understand how/which works are displayed during storage)> Thanks!

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Paul, the depot is a storage facility and most works are stored on racks or (in the case of works on paper) safely in boxes. Just a few (Christoper, The Peddler) are visible in the Highlights presentation. It is possible, however, to apply for a private viewing. For this service you need to pay the costs for art handling - which in your case can be quite substantial. I have checked and our collection counts 48 works that in one way or another are connected to Bosch. Probably they are not all equally important for you. By separate email I will send you a list with all the information. Some works do not have an image yet, as they have not been photographed professionally. In case you want to apply for a private viewing, please contact collectiebeheer@boijmans.nl. Good luck with your mission and kind regards, Els

  • thomas grison asked

  • Camille Baron asked

Hi, I work for a documentary film (no commercial use, no reproduction print or web) and I would be interested in receiving a very HQ picture (9000px x 9000px) of St Christopher by Bosch. How do I proceed?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hello Camille, if you could redirect your question to images@boijmans.nl, then they will help further with your request. Greetings, Sarie.

In an extensive landscape dotted with extraordinary scenes, the heathen giant Reprobus carries a child across a river. During the crossing the child becomes unbearably heavy. It is Jesus, who bears the weight of the sins of the world. He baptises the giant Christopher (Christ carrier) who becomes the patron saint of travellers.
