Rubens had his own art collection, which included drawings. Some of the drawings, in particular those by 16th-century Italian artists, he altered drastically. This drawing was believed to be an existing drawing by Francesco Primaticcio reworked by Rubens. However, there are no traces of an underdrawing. The two standing female figures at left he probably made it during a visit to the Palace of Fontainebleau, as a study after the famous stucco reliefs of caryatids in the Escalier du Roi, designed by Primaticcio around 1545. On the other hand, the third female figure at right is based on a print by Léon Davent naar Primaticcio. [text: Albert Elen]
