This scene of peasants fighting, a popular subject at that time, is based on a lost painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. We know of the original from an engraving by Lucas Vorsterman dated around 1620, in which the group is reversed relative to our drawing. There is also a painting by Rubens, which has survived, in which the same group is depicted in more detail with a farmyard and a peasant woman gesturing despairingly in the background.
