This is a study for a detail of the large oil painting The Deposition,
now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lille. It is likely that Rubens made
this drawing directly from life. The study was intended for the figure of
Saint John, standing at the foot of the cross, receiving the body of the
dead Christ from three other men on two ladders. In the painting this
figure is clothed.
