More information

This drawing is a preparatory study for The Resurrection of Christ (now in the State Hermitage in Saint Petersburg).

There were numerous study sheets such as this one in Rubens’ studio. In addition to composition drawings Rubens also made separate studies for details in his paintings. He took great pains to make a convincing representation of postures and the musculature of individual limbs. He kept these studies and sometimes used them again later. As such, the studies on a single sheet do not necessarily relate to a single painting. In this case the three studies are preparatory to two secondary figures in a painting of The Resurrection.
