This drawing comes from Jordaens' most creative period, the years between 1628 and 1641. The Feast of Epiphany or the Three Kings is celebrated on 6 January. Jordaens depicted the feast repeatedly, portraying a colourful group of people raising their glasses to the king with the toast 'The king drinks'. The drawing is a carefully worked out modello for the large painting in the Royal Museums in Brussels.
