The main theme on this painting by Aelbert Cuyp is the grey which is featured prominently at the side. The animal is richly adorned with purple ribbons, a saddle and a pistol. A fashionably dressed boy holds the reins, together with the lead to which the sitting dog is attached. The rider has dismounted and is seated behind the horse, pulling up his boots. In the background, a man with a hunting horn walks behind three dogs. Apparently this is a hunting group, and the main figure is taking a rest.
