Cornelis Decker painted nothing but landscapes and the interiors of weavers, a strange speciality, for which there was apparently a demand.
His landscapes date from the period between 1640 and 1669. The Rotterdam painting dates from 1654. Characteristic for Decker is the great mobility that the various parts seem to have. The trees for example grow in various directions, the lighting seems bizarre and capricious.
The higgledy-piggledy fences placed across the high dune is, for example, typical. It is a theme that is often encountered in Decker’s landscapes.
