  In Metsu's "Lady at a Virginal" accession# VdV 49, there is little dog to the viewer's right. Would you kindly tell me the species of that dog? Happily, they turn up in a number of 17th century Dutch genre paintings. Thank you very much.

  Hi Rodney, What a fun discovery! I don't know much about dog breeds, but I think it is a 'Drentsche patrijshond'. This is a Dutch hunting dog that is indeed often depicted in old paintings. The dog can serve as a warning against immorality in sexually tinted paintings. In this painting we see on the virginal the text 'In You, O Lord, I trust: let me not be ashamed forever'. The red slipper in the foreground is also an often used erotic symbol and in this case the dog could therefore symbolize immoral behavior. Thank you for this interesting question!   Te zien is een vrouw achter een virginaal die een commanderend gebaar maakt naar een hondje. Waarschijnlijk ligt een erotische lading verborgen in dit schilderij. Het muiltje op de voorgrond is een veelgebruikt erotisch symbool. Het hondje kan symbool staan voor de minnaar. Op het virginaal staat in het Latijn de tekst: 'Op U, O Heere, betrouw ik: laat mij niet beschaamd worden in eeuwigheid'. Deze tekst krijgt in de context een vermanende betekenis.
