A view of the sea from the dunes. Two ships, so-called pinks, and a rowing boat at lying on the beach. Two figures can be seen far off on the beach, while a third is walking into the dunes. To the right, three masts stick out above the dunes.
The small painting is signed at bottom left with the initials of Willem van de Velde. The work was apparently produced partly by Willem van de Velde de Jonge and partly by his younger brother Adriaan van de Velde (1636-1672).
Van de Velde painted this particular spot in the Dutch dunes on several occasions. One of the works, the ‘View of the North Sea from the dunes near Zandvoort’, is also in the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Whether these are actually the dunes near Zandvoort is, however, not certain.
