Like the other artists of the Cobra group, Constant envisaged a society of free expression in which everyone could be an artist. In 1949 he explored the source of creativity in paintings of plants, animals and fantasy creatures in a spontaneous and colourful painting style. Bird is a typical Cobra painting. Several years later, Constant made war paintings in which he depicted human misery and catastrophe. The two other paintings by Constant that Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen bought from Delta are examples of the latter.
