Asger Jorn initiated intellectual discussion on an international level and so became a pivotal figure in post-war European art. In 1949 he was a co-founder of Cobra and until 1961 he was a member of the Situationist International. Initially he painted fantasy creatures in an expressive style, influenced by Edvard Munch and the French Surrealists. Plein Air with Noseless Horses is more abstract in character. With a little fantasy, you can recognise a horses’ heads, with dark dots for eyes. The painting seems improvised, full of energy, with colours that alternate between light and dark.
