Peter Blake exhibited with other British Pop artists, but contemporary visual culture is only one of his sources. His work also borrows from book illustrations and folk art. Important influences are Joseph Cornell and Kurt Schwitters. Even as a child, Blake collected picture postcards of famous people, which he used in the 1950s and 1960s as inspiration for a series of paintings. Aparicio is based on a postcard of the famous Spanish bullfighter Julio Aparicio Martinez.
