In the early 1960s Claes Oldenburg made replicas of consumer goods and food, which he used in theatrical performances and sold in his own shop: The Store. His work was a reaction to Abstract Expressionism, bringing art to the man in the street like a commodity. This baked potato on a plate was his first multiple. The potato (edition of 75) is hand-painted, but has a manufactured look due to the specially developed paint scheme. The snipped chives were made by spattering the paint with a toothbrush.
