The Flemish painter, draughtsman and printmaker Walter Vaes painted still lifes, flower still lifes, portraits, history paintings and cityscapes. In the first half of the 20th century he portrayed Flanders’ most prominent citizens. This portrait of Louise-Felicite de Stuers, a member of the Dutch aristocracy, shows a sweet girl in a flowery dress with her hair in two knots. The painting demonstrates Vaes’ love of elegance, material beauty and a poetic atmosphere.
