Ask anything

  • Elina Nurmi asked

I have a question regarding Erhard Schöns and Hans Sachs' Provost (c. 1530). He is wearing a metal chain across his body and I've seen these heavy necklaces on other depictions as well - but not on all the men. Were the chains perhaps a sign of the wearers nobility or could they have been worn by a lowly born man who rose up in the ranks? I've haven't been able to find an answer to this in any of the literature I've read. Sincerely, Elina Nurmi

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

    Hi Elina,

The chain, plumed hat and impressive tunic display the high status of the provost. They are not a sign of nobility, but indicate the senior status of the provost. The provost represented police powers in a lansquenet regiment and acted as prosecutor in legal cases. His post was one of the 'regimental offices', like that of the judge advocate, the officer of the watch and the quartermaster. The short pike or spontoon he carries identifies him as an office-holder.

    Kind regards, Tanja
