A lansquenet on double pay received eight guilders a month-twice as much as a common lansquenet. Double-pay soldiers were paid the higher rate primarily because they had better weapons (at this time soldiers had to provide their own). This 'Hanns Unverzagt' (Jack Dauntless) carries a two-handed sword over his shoulder. Ordinary lansquenets only had a short sword.
