Ask anything

  • Kris asked

Why is it an England top on top of a boot on top of a TARTAN chair? Should I be offended?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hello Kris, I am sorry but I do not recognize your description in Fast by Alexandra Bircken. Anyway, please do not feel offended, that's not the idea of art. An artwork can be strange, but it is the vision of an artist and often meant to think again about things one usually takes for granted. Kind regards, Els

  • Joopie asked

Why does the artist use these colors?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Joopie, thanks for your question. I am afraid that the only one who can answer it with certainty is the artist herself. I would say that red and green are strong complementary colors which in are often used in this way to indicate simple, traditional life in the country side - as opposed to modern life in the city. The figure that Bircken has created here would , at least to my interpretation, rather stroll through the woods than visit a nightclub. I hope this is helpful. Kind regards, Els

  • John asked

What’s the significance of the plaster cast within the boot? Does it just simply denote the foot?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi John, I am not sure if the plaster cast in the boot has another meaning than being supportive for the whole sculpture. Kind regards, Els
