Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen has remained in the shadow of his two artistically gifted children, flower painter Geraldine and landscape painter Julius, but he himself was not without talent. His landscapes have a Romantic character and many are situated outside the Netherlands, such as this view of the elevated ruins of a castle, probably somewhere in Germany.
