Thank you so much for your help Els!!
I am hoping to sell these beautiful stoneware sculptures to a museum or someone who will add them to their collection of Joseph Mendes Da Costa works. I don’t know where to start in listing them for sale.
I appreciate your help. My husband bought the book you suggested. Thank you!!

We have two owls by Joseph Mendes da Costa. Would love more information on these beautiful owls. Thank you! Linda

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Linda, I would have loved to recommend a book about Mendes da Costa, but unfortunately they are all in Dutch. The only publication that might be suitable (also for the context) is: Eugene Langendijk and Mienke Simon Thomas, Dutch Art Nouveau and Art Deco Ceramics 1880-1940: the Boijmans Van Beuningen Collection, 2001. Mendes da Costa was a Jewish sculptor living in Amsterdam and connected to the so called 'Nieuw Kunst' [New Art]. He collaborated with various architects, a.o. Berlage, and it is said that Berlage's Exchange building is decorated with over 20 owls. In fact he has become famous for his small animal sculptures. I hope this is helpful. Kind regards, Els
