I'm Too Sad To Tell You

Bas Jan Ader (in 1970)

Ask anything

  • Paul Uhlmann asked

Bas Jan Ader makes a film of himself crying and produces an image of himself in a high state of emotional distress as a postcard and sends this to friends across Europe. What can he be saying with this public action? Is it a cry for personal help of does it address the need to allow young males the option to show their vulnerability? If this was somehow taboo in 1970 when the image of male masculinity was one of quiet forbearance what is the common interpretation of such an image today in 2023?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Paul, Thank you for asking. Asking the question is, I think, in a way answering it. Do you think so much has changed since the 1970s that the image has a completely different interpretation now? Kind regards, Els
