The Rotterdam born artist Buytewech was also known as 'Witty Willem'. His paintings are happy and witty scenes, which could be explained as moralistic indictments of sinful and worldly pleasures. The frivolous men indulge in all that God has forbidden: alcohol, tobacco and gambling.
