The maker of this portrait, in which the coat of arms identifies the sitter as a son of the painter Bor of Amersfoort, has never been identified. Jan de Bray was mentioned, but unconvincingly. Then an artist called De Bye was suggested on the basis of a few related pictures. Who knows? What is so fascinating is that an anonymous work can be so superb.
