Ask anything

  • Dr. Walter Lokau, Bremen, Germany asked

Dear Sir & Madame, I do not have a question but a correction: This caraf (Accession number 2238) is NOT Kaj Franck's design "1609" for Nuutajärvi Finland from 1953 but the pitcher model-nr. "3002" from 1957 designed by Klaus Breit for the glass factory Wiesenthalhütte in Germany - it was produced from 1958 1966 in different colours. Klaus Breit was very inspired from Scandinavian glass. The designs differ in proportions and "3002" is a litte bit elongated and taller than Franck's design - "3002" was about 24 cm, "1609" only had about 22 cm. Here you can find Kaj Franck's design:

If you compare your piece with this one you can clearly see the differences. If you want I can send you excerpts from Wiesenthalhütte-catalogues from the Sixties... Sincerely, Dr.Walter Lokau, Bremen, Germany

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Mr. Lokau, Thank you very much for your information concerning this carafe. We really did not realise this! We acquired the carafe from a specialised collector who even knew Kaj Franck personally, so I did not questions his attribution to Franck. But I suppose you are quite right, we must certainly change this! Thank you. With kind regards, Mienke Simon Thomas, Senior curator decorative arts and design
