More than in any other painting by Aelbert Cuyp, 'golden sunlight' dominates here, and this gives this work a very southern character. Cuyp, however, never visited Italy. His knowledge of 'southern' light was gained second hand from and strongly influenced by the work of Jan Both, whose work Cuyp would have known well thanks to his Utrecht contacts.
