After the painter Johan Barthold Jongkind settled in Paris, he travelled on several occasions to the Netherlands, the land of his birth. He was there for the last time in August 1869, when he visited Rotterdam and Dordrecht. The many 'Vues de Hollande' which appeared after this stay were painted in France from memory.
