The painting bears the date ‘Anno 1630 Ovt 54.J.’ and this means that it was produced in 1630 when the woman in the portrait was 54 years old. She is seated in a chair and is wearing a dark cloak edged with fur. The imposing collar gives the portrait a strong accent.
The panel was for a long time attributed to the Amsterdam portrait painter Thomas de Keyser (1596/97-1667). The painting, however, deviates too much from his way of working. Considering the relationship in style, the painter must be somebody in the circle of De Keyser.
