  • Lauren asked

Good afternoon. I was wondering why this painting is named Lyrical

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hello Lauren, the title was given by the artist, Wassily Kandinsky. It expresses his wish to paint a mood or emotion, rather than a scene. Kandinsky wanted painting to become abstract as music, which not only shows on the canvas, but also in his titles. I hope this answer is helpful. Kind regards, Els

  • Nate asked

What media is Lyrical made in?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Nate, You can find this information under the blue button 'show all details'. In this case: oil on canvas. All best, Els

More information

Kandinsky has rendered this horse and rider at full gallop with the most minimal of means: just a few well placed lines and patches of colour. The painting dates from 1911, Kandinsky's turning point between realism and abstraction. He attained a synthesis of emotion and intellect through his free use of form, line and colour. He is one of the founders of abstract art.
