Like so many of his gifted fellow townsmen, Leveck went to specialise with Rembrandt in Amsterdam for lack of a good teacher in Dordrecht. He did not stay long, and later abandoned Rembrandt’s approach to art. Here, though, he is still under his spell. The characterisation of the sitter is formidable. A Romantic would say: tired, and with the shadow of death in the eyes.
