The winter cloaks this view of the city in a sombre, lead-grey atmosphere. The small figures seem somewhat lost as they move through this world of snow and ice. Ruisdael practised various genres of landscape. He painted winter landscapes from 1657, after he had settled in Amsterdam, but not in any large number.
