The painting is dated as ‘1632 D V S’. Dirck Dircksz (van) Santvoort is generally named as the maker. Recently, however, this attribution has been called into question and there is a tendency to refer to the artist as 'Monogrammist DVS’. The title, ‘Portrait of a boy in shepherd’s costume’, is also open to discussion. Taking into account the boy’s clothing and the hunting horn hanging from his belt, it may be better to talk about ‘Flute-playing hunter’. The painting has a pendant, showing a girl in a shepherdess’s costume.
