Canaletto made his famous series of ‘Vedute’ prints - city views of Venice and environs, including Padua, Dolo and Mestre - between 1740 and 1743 at the instigation of Joseph Smith, the British consul in Venice, who was also a collector and art dealer. The set represents his complete graphic oeuvre, which consists of thirty-four etchings. It is considered a milestone in 18th-century Italian printmaking.
