Between 1740 and 1743 Canaletto made his famous series of Vedute prints, city views of Venice and environs, including Padua, Dolo and Mestre. He did this at the instigation of the British consul in Venice Joseph Smith, who was also a collector and art dealer. The series represents his complete graphic oeuvre, which consists of 34 etchings. It is considered a milestone in 18th-century Italian
printmaking.
