This panel was originally part of a polyptych devoted to John the Baptist. It was once sawn in two across its entire width. It shows several scenes relating to the birth of John the Baptist including the announcement of his birth to his father Zacharias by the Archangel Gabriel and, on the right, the birth itself.
The altar piece was painted for a St. John church, perhaps for the church in Gouda. In addition to this panel, the museum owns another panel from this altar piece. A third panel is in Philadelphia.
