Daubigny spent a large part of his life in Paris. In the summer, however, he left the big city and travelled to other regions of France. In 1854 he paid his first visit to the Normandy coast. He would return here frequently in the years following, particularly to the town of Villerville. The lead grey sky and muddy sea suggests that the painting 'Stormy weather on the coast' was painted on the Normandy coast.
