This series of nine paintings by Marcel Broodthears is dedicated to two 17th-century masters: Pieter Jansz Saenredam and Peter Paul Rubens. Seven canvases feature the name of Rubens, each time written next to an illustration of a single detail from his works. The words conjure up images of paintings by Rubens. One canvas has only words that refer to Rubens work. On the only canvas that carries the name Saenredam, no other word is added. Saenredam was a master in painting empty church architecture. A contrast to the extravagant work of Rubens. With works such as these, Broodthears investigates the relationship between words, images and associative links. At the same time, he critically questions the way an art world concentrating on status operates by placing not the work in the spotlight but rather the names of the artists.
